090210 Operation New Dawn (aka Morning Wood)

090210 Operation New Dawn (aka Morning Wood)
As as yesterday, Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) is no more.  We are now in Operation New Dawn! (aka Morning Wood). As you can see (barely) from the pic above, the US has made significant strides to reduce its presence in Iraq.  There are no more 'combat' troops in Iraq. They are now called 'training' troops. And while 500 bases have been 'closed or transfered' there are still over 100 bases and these include the biggies like VGC, JBB (where I am), Tallil, Mosul, Al Asad, Speicher, etc.  I cannot think of even one 'big' base that has closed or been transferred.  There are also still lines at the DFAC, and a waiting list of 5 months to get a hooch for incoming personnel.  So from my perspective (which is what this blog is about) things haven't changed much.  Things will also probably be steady until about March 2011 which is when the coming rainy season will be ending.  That will be the next big push of equipment out of Iraq....maybe.
So to close, things are same ole, same ole.
And to answer the question you were thinking, yes, I have been in Iraq too long!

"Morning Wood" ? I think that might have been one of the "Bernie movies" I sent you last year. ;)

But seriously, I'm not surprised regarding your comments about bases not closing, lines still being line, our presence in general. Smoke and mirrors.

We'll still have bases and troops in Iraq in 2075. After all, its been 65 years since we defeated Germany and Japan and we're still there. Who is to say we won't still be in Iraq in another 65 years time (if we haven't collapsed due to the cost of empire).

After all, that really was the purpose behind the war.
